Demonstration of the Rumba by Espen and Kirsten Salberg at the World Cup Latin for Amateurs 1983 in The Netherlands. Norwegian born Espen (28th March 1952) and Kirsten (24th October 1947) are the world's best loved champions of Latin American Dance. They became world champions latin amateurs in 1976 and turned professionals that same year. In 1977, at their first world championships latin professionals in Japan, Espen and Kirsten reached fourth place. Champions that year were Alan & Hazel Fletcher, followed by Peter Maxwell & Lynn Harman, and Hirotada & Yoki Torii. In 1978 at the world championship latin professionals in Berlin, Germany, Espen and Kirsten moved up to the third place, with having the Fletchers first and Peter & Lynn second. In 1979, at the world championships in Baden, Switzerland, Espen and Kirsten reached second place. Again Alan and Hazel Fletcher became champions. Third place was for Robert and Helen Richey from Australia, fourth place Michael Stylianos and Lorna Lee, fifth were Ron Montez and Liz Curtis from the USA. In 1980, at the worlds in Perth, Australia, the Fletchers were again undefeated champions followed by Espen and Kirsten Salberg and on third place Sammy and Shirley Stopford. Espen and Kirsten also won the Carl Alan Award, which is the 'Oscar' of the dance world. In 1981, Espen and Kirsten won their first European professional latin title in Helsinki, Finland. They were followed on second place by Sammy and Shirley Stopford, on third Raymund and Gunn Myhrengen, on fourth Donnie Burns and Gaynor Fairweather. The world's championship was again won by the Fletchers, however for the first time the Salbergs had been able to win one of the dances from the Fletchers. In 1982, finally Espen and Kirsten won the professional world championship latin in Tokyo, Japan. The Fletchers had retired in 1981 after Blackpool. In 1983, in Germany, Espen & Kirsten Salberg again won the world latin championship, and they retired afterwards.
