- A single rhythm (sometimes called a "SLOW") is one weight change in two beats of music. Double rhythm is two weight changes in two beats of music (sometimes called a "QUICK QUICK") and triple rhythm is three weight changes in two beats of music. Repeating double rhythm is a step on every beat; repeating single rhythm is a step on every other beat. Repeating single rhythm is used in a sway so it's handy in slow dancing; plus it's an easy way to kill time on the floor if you get lost or confused. One of the secrets to understanding ballroom dancing is to recognize that almost every basic step pattern of a dance is some combination of single, double and triple rhythms.
