- Jonathan Crossley & Mpho MolikengThe SettlementRecently the Wits Archaeology department revealed some pre-colonial Tswana settlements south of Johannesburg. These settlements were discovered through the application of LiDAR imaging technologies, revealing complex and diverse Tswana settlements. Molikeng and Crossley chose to ‘make audible’ four of these images, expressing them live in differing ways.Molikeng performed on traditional Tswana instruments whilst Crossley manipulated and transformed these sounds through technological means, complimented with his playing of guitar, bass and banjo. This was a unique opportunity where the audience experienced the technological merged with the traditional, the current with the ancient and the sonic with the topographical (via the LiDAR maps projected on the ceiling).Crossley is a versatile performer and composer, who is deeply interested in contemporary and ancient musical cultures and appropriating technologies to facilitate their foregrounding. Molikeng’s multi-talents include acting, music, poetry, painting and story-telling.The performance is split into seven parts. There are four readings of LiDAR images (tracks 1,3,5, and 7) interspersed with three traditional Tswana songs. The track list is:1) The River (a LiDAR image)2) Mampe3) Twentieth Century Invasion (a LiDAR image, highlighting the invasion of technology)4) Senannapo5) The Settlement (a LiDAR image, the scaled nature of the various settlements in the LiDAR images)6) T’sepe7) The War (a LiDAR image)
